◎ Personality:
The first thing one may notice about Leliana is her faith. As a former lay sister of the Chantry Leliana has a strong belief in the Maker and Andraste. Once Leliana had a dream - a vision that she believed came from the Maker himself. In this vision Leliana had been chosen by the Maker. Though it led Leliana to being an outcast in the Chantry it didn't stop her passion or faith, instead leading her to aid the Grey Wardens - and future Hero of Ferelden - in their quest to stop the Blight. Although later matters have caused Leliana's faith to shake somewhat, with the death of Divine Justinia hitting her hard and making her question the Maker's wishes, Leliana still believes in the Maker and Andraste, still praying to him for guidance and answers.
Leliana's lifestyle and early training have changed Leliana, something that Leliana doesn't see until later in her life. Though some parts of Leliana have remained unchanged, though perhaps now hidden under her new sensibilities, Leliana is no longer the same person she was as a girl. Leliana knows death all too well, and it is something that has shaped her in life. Hit hard first by her mother's death, and then later by Divine Justinia's, shows how Leliana cares for others. When Leliana's agents are lost in the fight, and Haven and its people are later lost due to Corypheus's hand, Leliana believes that the outcome could have been different if she'd acted differently. Leliana chides herself for caring for her people too much, though had Leliana not cared more may have died still - and Haven still may not have been saved. Leliana's caring, despite how dispassionate bards are trained to be, leaves her with a heavy weight on her shoulders, and in her heart - with Leliana questioning her own decisions, and her faith, when something goes wrong.
Her lifestyle also gives Leliana a quieter, wary edge. As a spy, and assassin, Leliana is accustomed to sneaking in the shadows - a quiet creep upon her foes. Leliana is also quiet in her personal matters, keeping her life and thoughts close to her heart. Leliana knows that the wrong person knowing her - or her weaknesses - could result in an attack against her, given how many enemies she has accumulated. Leliana's past, particularly the betrayal by Marjolaine (and the Warden, if killed by them) provides Leliana with additional reasons to keep her life quiet - to protect herself from further pain or betrayal. Leliana is not completely alone, however. Josephine Montilyet - Ambassador for the Inquisition - is a close friend to Leliana, as is Cassandra. The Inquisitor (as the Warden did) can also become a friend, and confidante, to Leliana, learning of her past - her hopes, loves, and taking on a personal request for her.
Though Leliana is quiet, and somewhat cautious, she still retains a curious and joyful streak to her. As a girl, and even as companion to the Hero of Ferelden, Leliana was fond of stories and history. Bethany Hawke spoke of Leliana and her stories, remarking that she enjoyed listening to Leliana. As a companion to the Hero Leliana was filled with hope - hope that they could rid the world of this evil, the Blight and archdemon, and return hope to the world. Leliana would often tell stories from history, facts that she knew of places, or remark on a place with a wondrous gaze in her eyes. Though time has cautioned Leliana more, and made her demeanour more somber than joyful, Leliana is still full of hope and a love of stories. When telling a story of her past, of an adventure with the Hero, Leliana does so with pleasure, and a smile to her voice. Regaling the listener as only a bard can, but also reliving that moment herself. There are also still things that Leliana hopes to do and looks forward to doing, showing that her hope has not been entirely quashed by their darkened world. Leliana hopes (if romanced by the Warden) to return to her love one day, and live somewhere quietly, and also places a great deal of faith in the Inquisitor - hoping that they are the solution that everyone needs. Leliana has also been known to enjoy peace and quiet, and the safety that they represent - something that she no doubt hopes will occur once all tensions have subsided. Another of Leliana's loves is that of nugs. If gifted to her Leliana keeps one as a pet, gaining more in the future and later (during Trespasser) beginning to breed them.
Leliana is also known for her ruthless nature, and is considered the "sinister" agent of the Divine. Where Josephine's words or Cassandra's military tactics may fail Leliana is waiting in the shadows with a third option - the least pleasant option, and one often unable to be stopped. Although Leliana acknowledges that assassination is a terrible business that brings her no joy there is also little choice that they have by that point, and sometimes it is the necessary option - to stop a threat with as little notice as possible. She is noted for her brilliant mind, aiding her in her tactics, plotting and spying, though a weakness to Leliana's view on life - her weariness, and possibly training - is that she has begun to see life as a game of tactics. This is a marked change in the ten years between the Fifth Blight and the reconstitution of the Inquisition. Where originally Leliana was hopeful and more disagreeable to murder ten years of events - a lot of struggle, and war - have hardened Leliana's heart, making her cautious, and quicker to act with her blade than she would have done before. Although Leliana can be talked out of some assassinations, with the Inquisitor working to soften her heart to the world again, it doesn't completely shift how Leliana acts. Even as Divine Leliana acts with ruthless force, advising unity among the Chantry (using only words, if softened) whilst disbanding the Circle of Magi, allowing mages to govern themselves.
Whilst Leliana may be ruthless herself it's always in the persuit of good - of making the world better, or fixing the evil that is currently plaguing it. Though she is trained as a bard Leliana cannot stand for evil, using her skills to instead help others rather than cause more trouble. Whilst Leliana may give the order to assassinate someone, or kill them herself, it isn't on a whim and is often well thought out, and an action that is only taken as punishment of crime (e.g. traitors) or preventative measures (e.g. other assassinations). Leliana generally is a friendly and pleasant woman, even if she hides herself, her past, and most details about herself behind highly guarded walls. If Leliana trusts you she does so implicitly, and you are able to see more of her than the rest of the world does.
◎ Powers/Abilities:
BARD. Bards are trained in both archery and dual-weapon knifework. Bards are minstrels trained in the arts of assassination and spying, knowing how to weave their way in to someone's favour only to turn on them later. Bards are knowledgeable in history, often told through stories and song, so they do not repeat the mistakes of others - or become a part of history themselves. Leliana was trained as a bard in Orlais by Marjolaine, who ended up becoming fearful of Leliana's talents. Bards are also trained with hand gestures used to signal messages to other bards in the field. [1] SPYMASTER. Using her skills as a bard Leliana initially became Divine Justinia V's spymaster, becoming the Left Hand of the Divine. After the attack at the conclave, and Divine Justinia's death, Leliana continued her role as Spymaster for the Inquisition, using her numerous resources and network of agents to gain whatever intelligence and advantage they could over the ongoing threat.
◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory:
- one nug - Inquisition armour - two daggers
CEREALIA-Specific
◎ Element: Air
Leliana tends to favour the rookery as somewhere to visit when in Skyhold. With her use of the ravens it's an obvious place for her to be, and an obvious element - ravens fly.
◎ Sense: Sight
Though sounds may be an obvious choice for bards sight is more applicable to Leliana. As an archer she needs to have good sight, especially at a distance, to pick off her targets, and she needs to be observant to act well as a bard - to see dangers coming before they hurt her.
There are many secrets, even in a place likes this.
( One more secret is the identity of the woman that's giving the video. Her voice isn't masked, her Orlesian accent the only distinct thing about the whole affair. The room is mostly dark, enough light from a single candle to show that someone is there - perhaps that they're female, if the voice didn't give that away, but no details to tell you who )
Some are easy to find, others are well kept. It makes the effort more enjoyable.
( There's a smile that tugs on the last words of the sentence. Finding secrets - things about people, things not related to an end of the world disaster - was certainly a little fun. Gossip, blackmail. Stories )
How far would you go to protect one of yours? Would you need to, or are they hidden well enough already? Or are you too afraid to even admit such a thing? Where I'm from secrets are a dangerous thing. They can hurt more than an army, sign your death, or raise you up. I have seen secrets used for many things. I have never seen a secret that could never be found. Our 'saviours' here have some interesting things, I'm sure. But they cannot hide.
If you believe this 'truth' of theirs then you're the fool. As foolish as they for thinking they could contain us. They are powerful in order to do this, but every powerful thing can be stopped. I have seen it before, and I will see it again.
( CERES. Corypheus. The world was full of darkness, but you couldn't see the light if you didn't believe it was possible )
◎ Third-Person Sample:
Seventy-two hours. It's how long she'd been gone for - how long they'd kept her. It wasn't a new experience - being captured, tortured. Leliana knew her nightmares well. She knew what demons and magic could do - had been on the receiving end of their whims, but ViViD was different. It wasn't magic - not in the same way. There you were dreaming, and sometimes you could tell what wasn't real - to separate yourself from it.
This has been real. It had felt real - worse than the Fade did. Leliana hadn't been able to separate the nightmares from her mind - she'd just been trapped. Recurring feelings of hopelessness, dark images and death. Worse than any creatures she'd seen.
Cerelia was different to Ferelden, or even Orlais. There you had the game - knew the game. If you knew enough you could see something coming, or get a warning. Leliana didn't have her people here, and everything was different. CERES played by different rules and it was frustrating. A challenge, something that Leliana needed to figure out - to know how it worked, and how to operate around it. That was when she'd been doing when they'd come. Robots swarmed in - mechanical things that were monsters of their own kind. And they'd taken her.
It had all come from a simple suggestion. A robot. Or a sex robot, if you wanted to be as familiar as Hawke was. She'd been trying to build up a network, find information - find out their secrets. Leliana couldn't be certain whether Hawke's suggestion had been to help her or for something else (although it was a sex robot). Maybe that had been the mistake - agreeing. Whatever purpose Hawke had had for it Leliana had tried to use it for her own.
It had just been questions. She couldn't hurt it, nor even really threaten it. Questions were all that remained - she didn't know robots enough to know anything more to do to them. The answers hadn't come, and it wasn't too long before more robots arrived. There wasn't much Leliana remembered between that and waking up in the facility, but one thing had been clear. CERES hadn't liked what she'd been doing.
Seventy two hours wasn't enough to make Leliana stop. She couldn't stop, not if she didn't want her nightmares to be true. There was one thing that her next effort would entail though - not using a sex robot. Or maybe not listening to Hawke.
