Character Name: Gideon Series: DCTV ( Legends of Tomorrow ) Timeline: 213 Land of the Lost Canon Resource Link:gideon @ wikia Character History:
Gideon is an artificial consciousness that has been a part of, and works aboard the Waverider for over a decade. Along with her captain, Rip Hunter, she has assisted him in protecting the timeline and in bringing Time Pirates to justice. Alongside assisting Rip with knowledge on the timeline and their missions she has also guided him, served not only as his conscience and confidante but also a tactician, helping him to devise strategies for the successful completion of their tasks.
Whilst they originally worked for the Time Masters their refusal to allow Rip to alter the timeline to prevent Vandal Savage's rise to power caused him to go rogue, with Gideon in full approval of his plan. Aware of it prior to his meeting with the Time Council Gideon asked him the status of their next move once he'd returned, and remarked upon the fact that there would be others joining them on this mission -- something that Gideon found to be strange given that Rip preferred working alone, with only her for guidance. By allowing Rip to take the Waverider, and her, Gideon defied her programming and protocols which would have dictated stopping him and reporting him to the time council. Pulling up the files of Sara Lance, Ray Palmer, Martin Stein, Jefferson Jackson, Mick Rory, Leonard Snart, Kendra Saunders and Carter Hall for Rip, Gideon navigated the Waverider to each location for their recruitment.
After the crew had been recruited, and Gideon introduced to them, they began by travelling to 1975 in search of knowledge on Vandal Savage's location. After half of the team depart the ship Jefferson asks Gideon to return him to 2016, though she refuses under Captain Hunter's orders. At his complaint, and insult of her being a computer, she offers him a sedative, subtly trying to shut him up as well as calm him down. Finding an expert on Vandal Savage they manage to retrieve the information, but the Waverider is attacked by a bounty hunter, sent by the Time Master's to bring them in. Gideon manages to jump the ship away, remaining in 1975 but now in Norway. The crew discovers that Savage has gotten his hands on nuclear weapons, and set out to try and foil his plans. Unfortunately, and possibly something that could have been expected, Stein, Jefferson, Sara, Mick and Rory were detected by Savage, causing him to set off an explosive. Though the team managed to quell the disturbance, and prevent the explosive from killing a lot of people, there were unexpected events. After locating the dagger that could kill Vandal Savage they attempted to kill him, resulting in the death of Carter and the wounding of Kendra. The team was grounded momentarily with Kendra's injuries preventing a time jump, though it allowed Rip and Gideon to examine the timeline for Savage's next appearance, and to formulate a new plan.
Travelling next to 1986 the team break into the Pentagon to allow Gideon to intercept files on Savage's whereabouts. Discovering that, along with Russian scientists, that Savage is looking to create a Soviet Firestorm the team spring into action, trying to prevent the catastrophe. Unfortunately Stein, Ray and Mick are captured, causing the others to mount a rescue mission. With the team successfully extracted Gideon pilots the Waverider from 1986. As they travel through the time stream they are attacked by Chronos, with Gideon managing to fight off all but one of the missiles. The damage to the ship causes Gideon to force a crash landing, stranding them in Star City, 2046.
Due to a fire inside the ship Gideon's systems are shut down, requiring a repair to the Waverider to bring her back. As the team investigates 2046 for the required parts they're intercepted by someone whom they think is a friend -- the Green Arrow. Although the team is successful in retrieving the part, managing to bring Gideon back online, they are torn over what to do about Star City. Although this future is not their future Sara wishes still to save it, at odds with Rip -- and Gideon, who doesn't believe that she can sustain the ship's power. Sara goes to help regardless, with Kendra helping to repair the ship under guidance from Gideon. With Star City saved after the team joins Sara, and the Waverider repaired, Gideon gives a report on the status of the ship, almost (nosily) adding in both Jefferson and Ray's attempts to court Kendra, though she's interrupted before she can mention too much.
After Savage's trail goes cold, and Gideon unable to further locate him in the timeline, Rip does the one thing that may seem the most foolish -- answer a distress call from another time ship. Given the Waverider's rogue status they would be likely to be turned in, however Rip believed that giving aid would gain them an opportunity to gain an updated view of the timeline to help Gideon locate Savage. The distress call ended up being a trap, with time pirates taking some of the crew hostage. Tensions run high between Rip and Mick, causing the latter to betray the Waverider to the pirates. After Stein rescues the crew, and the ship's captain, they return to the Waverider, with the updated information. Unfortunately, due to his actions, Leonard has to 'take care of' Mick, apparently killing him.
Discovering that Savage was linked to murders in 1958 the crew travel there, discovering that he'd been attempting to recreate the abilities of Carter and Kendra in the teenagers of the time. Through a serum that Gideon and Stein created, the team manage to reverse Savage's experiment they were (once again) attacked by Chronos who takes control of the ship, stranding Ray, Sara and Kendra in 1958 as it leaves. With the Waverider disabled and floating through the time stream Rip is forced to reset Gideon to undo the sabotage. Unfortunately, due to the attack, Gideon isn't able to return the Waverider to the moment that they'd left, getting them back as close as she could -- two years later. With the crew returned they make a shocking discovery as they take Chronos in -- he's Mick Rory. With Gideon holding him in one of the cells the crew decide to try and reform him, still requiring his help (and apologetic for what had happened to him).
Realising that they have little time left Gideon helps Rip come up with the next plan -- they need to stop Savage closer to the moment, this time travelling to 2147. Hoping that by removing Savage's protege (Per Degaton) from the timeline they can prevent Savage's rise to power, Rip confides in Gideon about his plan. After kidnapping the boy Sara questions what he's dreaming of, with Gideon revealing that she can see into his dreams, and the rest of the crew's -- something that Sara is a little uncomfortable to realise. After kidnapping Per Degaton doesn't affect the timeline Rip realises that he needs to go further. Gideon is supportive of Rip, despite the difficult decision, though the rest of the crew doesn't believe that killing Per Degaton is the right thing to do. Instead Rip returns the boy to the timeline, though the timeline of events is accelerated, with Savage now rising to power earlier.
Unfortunately they don't have time to deal with that now, as the Time Master's latest threat on the crew's lives takes precedence. With the knowledge that the Hunters have been sent after the crew they hide in 1871, though are found by the Hunters. Though the Hunters are defeated it is revealed that the Pilgrim has been sent out also, in order to kill the younger selves of the crew. Gideon is able to use the Pilgrim's temporal distortions in order to predict her next move, allowing the crew to rescue their younger selves before she can kill them. Enraged the Pilgrim takes on more step, kidnapping the crew's loved ones in order to force them to turn over themselves. Rip agrees to do so, also taking his younger self along -- knowing that he would be able to stop the Pilgrim, killing her in order to save his own life (and thus everyone else's).
With all but one threat defeated, leaving Savage left, the crew finally travel to 2166 -- their only move left. Tracking Savage down the team almost have him defeated until he reveals that Carter Hall is alive, though lacking his memories. Wishing her love returned Kendra fails to kill him, forcing the team to come up with a new plan. Hoping that the Time Masters will help, with Savage and a confession in hand, Rip takes them back to the Vanishing Point.
Despite all of the evidence against Savage the Time Masters still refuse to help, revealing that they had been helping Savage all along, with their plan for nought. With the threat of a future event looming the Time Masters had believed that Savage was the only one that could stop it, and had manipulated time (and broken their own rules) to ensure Savage's help. Managing to escape (again) from the Time Masters they concoct a new plan -- to destroy the Oculus, ensuring that the Time Masters can never manipulate anything (or anyone) again. Though they are able to destroy the Oculus it required Leonard Snart to sacrifice his life to ensure that it would be destroyed. With the Time Masters out of the game the only problem left is Savage. Tracking him down they discover that Savage plans to turn back time to 1700 BC to rewrite his (and Kendra's) destiny. Realising that the only way to kill him requires rendering him mortal first the crew attack him at three points in time, killing him in each of them -- and finally ending Savage. As well as stopping Savage they also needed to prevent the meteorites from exploding, which had been how Savage had planned to turned back time. Though the Legends were able to stop them in two time points they couldn't get to the third in time, requiring Rip to use the Waverider to send it into the sun. As Rip prepares to do this Gideon confides in him, expressing her fears over dying. Rip comforts her, admitting that he is also afraid, though they are successful and the time ship remains in tact. With Savage's death Kendra and Carter opt to stay in 2016, wanting to start a threat-free life, though the rest of the crew wish to travel still. Before they can begin to celebrate they are approached by Rex Tyler who warns them of their impending deaths. Not able to learn much from Rex before he disappears the crew head back onto the Waverider, taking one more trip out. And then six more months worth. Non-stop.
After visiting France, and successfully completing their mission, Gideon begins to offer her congratulations to Rip for it, noticing how far the crew has come since they first began travelling on the Waverider. Mid-celebration the ship is hit by a time quake, something that neither Rip nor Gideon had ever experienced before. After discovering that a nuclear bomb would be detonated in New York, causing a time aberration, Rip scattered the crew throughout history in order to protect them, intercepting the bomb with the Waveriver to save New York City. Due to injuries that Mick had sustained on the last mission Rip had to leave him in the medbay, in stasis. With little time left until the Waverider intercepts the bomb Rip checks on Gideon, and when she replies that she's there he replies with relief that yes, she always is. With the crew scattered, and Mick in stasis, Rip leaves a final message with Gideon for the crew before the Waverider intercepts the bomb, leaving it derelict in the ocean for 70 years.
It isn't until Nate Heywood discovered the Waverider that things got back on track. Waking Mick from stasis, and reactivating Gideon, they set about reuniting the crew, and fixing their mistake. Despite a successful mission, managing to prevent New York from being destroyed by the bomb, Gideon was unable to locate Captain Hunter anywhere in time. Though they had a new addition to their team in Nate, and Sara would eventually take over as Captain of the Waverider, the dynamic (for Gideon) was not quite the same. Her oldest friend was no longer there, and she couldn't help but feel a little lost.
It didn't help when, in addition to fixing time aberrations, they found a new foe in the 'Legion of Doom'. A speedster that they would discover to be Eobard Thawne, along with Damien Darhk and Malcolm Merlyn, were looking to alter the fabric of reality. Though the team wouldn't discover that for several months it led to several things: locating Rip Hunter, finding an item known as the Spear of Destiny (an item that could rewrite reality), and working with another superhero group. Though they had completed a successful mission with the JSA, a group working in the 1940's to protect the world, when the leader of the JSA was killed one of its members stowed away aboard the Waverider, certain that one of the crew had killed him. When it was revealed that they didn't, and they were fighting the same battle, Amara asked to stay aboard so that she could help search for the killer.
It would be that searching for the killer would lead them to Rip Hunter, as the Legion of Doom were also looking for him. Finding Rip without his memories the team fought, though failed to rescue him before the Legion were able to capture him. Though Gideon would be relieved that he was alive, she would also be saddened that he had been captured. Whilst she had come to respect the other members of the crew, taking to calling Sara Captain and developing a rapport with the others, none of them could come close to filling the gap that Rip had left. Gideon's loss was reflected in her manner to the crew, though other than Nate commenting that he didn't think Gideon liked him, little was thought of it -- she wasn't "real". After it was commented that perhaps she wasn't working fast enough Gideon retorted that she could "redirect power from life support", and made certain that they knew that she could hear their comments about her, and when she was making a point to ignore them.
Although they failed to capture Rip they managed to obtain a device that the Legion had also been searching for. Once connecting it to Gideon they discovered that it was a map, leading them to pieces of the Spear of Destiny. They'd learned on a previous mission that Rip, knowing what the Spear could do, had taken it to the three remaining members of the JSA, splitting it into four pieces and getting each of them, including Rip, to hide their piece of the Spear throughout time. Each time they located a piece of the Spear they had a fight on their hands with the Legion of Doom, but that wasn't all. Eobard Thawne had managed to recover Rip's memories, though he'd altered Rip's mind in the process, getting him to work alongside the Legion. They not only had Rip against them but Rip giving them the locations of the Spear. Though the Legends managed to gather one the fight was tough.
After one mission saw Gideon, and the Waverider, shut down and Sara nearly lost it seemed as if everything was against them. Thankfully the rest of the team managed to get both the ship and Gideon operational again, allowing Gideon to save Sara's life. With the crew back in one piece they were able to bring Rip in, placing him in one of the holding cells and instructing Gideon to not respond to his commands. Which was difficult, and Rip knew this. Rip attempted to make contact on multiple occasions, and though Gideon responded she called him Mister Hunter instead of Captain Hunter, her tone a little colder showing her displeasure for what had become of him, and the situation. Rip didn't like this, and in an effort to release himself (and screw over the team) gave Gideon an override command. Although she asked him to not make her do it he repeated the command, and Gideon had no choice but to comply -- though she didn't do it happily.
With the command releasing Rip he made his way to the artifact that Gideon had been analysing, activating the Waverider's self destruct sequence. In order to stop the self destruct sequence they needed to reboot Gideon, causing the Waverider to crash land. When a complaint was made over the piloting of the landing Gideon huffed that she had already apologised, not at all pleased about the remark.
With the crew searching for Rip on the ship, finding him, he destroys the artifact before being knocked unconscious and taken to the medical bay. With Rip's mind altered by Eobard Thawne, his thoughts twisted - lending Rip to not know what was real, Mick suggested using a cognitive intrusion to try and find out the information from Rip, and potentially bring him back. Although Gideon wished to have her Captain back with them, she found the process to be barbaric and recommended against it. Despite her opinion the procedure was conducted, causing Gideon to also take presence in Rip's mind.
Inside Rip's mind, a twisted version of the Waverider, Gideon first set about reuniting with Jax and Sara to help them find Rip and free him from the torment. Finding Jax first Gideon explained the situation, though kept the nature of how she was there (and in a human form) cryptic, stating only that she was real. With Jax the two located both Sara and Rip, freeing them from the cell. Though Gideon is ultimately relieved to have found Rip, the first stage to helping him, she's troubled by the state of his mind and focuses their attention on helping to free Rip rather than getting the information about the Spear of Destiny. Though the group ran into obstacles Gideon was fundamental in helping Rip remember who he was, reminding him that Jax and Sara were real. This helped Rip, seeing his crew in danger, to save them, causing the walls of his mental construct to fall. Once Jax and Sara had departed Rip's mind Rip turned to thank Gideon for keeping him company during his tormented days, and for guiding him home, though he was reluctant to leave her -- fearing losing her. Noting this Gideon assured him that she would always be there, in one form or another.
Abilities/Special Powers:
SUPERCOMPUTER. Gideon has full control over the Waverider and her systems and frequently pilots and time jumps the ship. She also has a vast knowledge of the timeline and is capable of detecting time aberrations, including predicting how altering past events may affect the future. In addition to operating the navigation of the Waverider Gideon also administers medical treatment, including healing crew members and administering sedatives. She has also guided Martin Stein in how to perform brain surgery. TELEPATHY. Gideon has shown that she is able to see into the team's dreams, and knew the state of Rip's mind prior to entering it, able to advise Sara and Jefferson on how to help save him. HACKING. Gideon is able to sabotage other AI systems and can mask her data trail to appear as a different source. TACTICIAN. Gideon is able to produce plans and strategies which have helped Rip out on numerous occasions, particularly when he sees the situation as hopeless.
Third-Person Sample:
Wonderland had already done one thing to Gideon -- it had humanised her. She wasn't human, she didn't eat, sleep or breathe but the body that she now had had been mistaken enough as human that sometimes she didn't argue it. There were more questions than she really should give answers for, and this small technicality didn't always require correcting.
It had taken Gideon a while to get used to her new form -- to having a body. She'd observed humans for a long time, with a long life over her years with Captain Hunter, but performing similar tasks wasn't quite so intuitive. Walking, requiring to be physically present... and feeling. That had been perhaps the most difficult thing to adjust to. Gideon had seen how emotion had affected Rip -- how happy, or sad, he could become but she didn't know what it was like to be gripped by those emotion; how difficult it became to think, or sometimes smile.
Even though Gideon had been changed by Wonderland already, and she'd read about everything that had occurred in Wonderland previously -- the events, she didn't expect it to happen again.
Wings. Wings were the first thing that Gideon had noticed, and then her smaller size. That hadn't come until she'd started speaking to Ray, and had questioned why things seemed abnormally larger than usual.
There had been an announcement of something coming in the previous few days but as yet Gideon had yet to find a pattern that could dictate what was to be expected in advance. Now it seemed that she was experiencing another event. It wasn't her first, not even her fifth, but it was the first time where her form had been changed.
Doctor Palmer had been able to explain much to her, even giving her suggestions as to what she possibly was, how long this might be effective for and what was happening to them. The latter was the least certain part of it all, but even a guess helped Gideon to feel reassured. It helped her to feel a little safer.
Many people had given Gideon suggestions for what she should do through this event -- try to fly, cause mischief, hide people's things. The latter two ideas had no appeal, and the first-- some days Gideon found it difficult enough being 'human'. To walk, to feel, to be a person that couldn't simply disappear if they wished to be alone. Trying to fly, not only for it seeming difficult but when it would have little relation to anything that she would be able to do after this event was over?
Perhaps if her size had remained as normal she may have found this event a little easier, and some of the changes simpler to ignore. At least it would soon be over, if Doctor Palmer's estimate had been correct. Gideon really hoped that it was.
First-Person Sample:
I have counted numerous inconsistencies in this location with what should be possible. Whilst it is likely that this location does exist outside of time it should not be possible that we are able to exist here on multiple occasions. Crossing over into your own time stream can causes unmentionable consequences.
The frequent alterations made to our lives and physicality should also not be possible in the manner that they occur. Such changes would require an object that could rewrite reality, though given that we remember the alterations I do not believe such a thing has occurred.
( In short she is stumped, and that is not something that happens to Gideon often. She knows a lot about time -- history, the future, and things that can change it, and given that there have been no time quakes, subtle changes or anything familiar whatever does happen is something outside of her knowledge. That already seems like it shouldn't be possible on its own, and yet here she is. Here she is also changed from what she should be, the second 'impossibility' )
Discovering how and why these changes occur would be paramount to discovering a way to prevent or reverse them. I am aware that many attempts have previously been attempted, but the solution still remains to be discovered. I would like to know of any that are familiar with time so that a solution can be attempted. Sooner, rather than later.
I have experienced individuals that I know departing from Wonderland, and though it is something that I had experienced previously at home it was under different circumstances.
One thing that I find more troubling is the arrival of others that I am supposed to meet but have yet to do so. I am familiar with time travel and accept that they are from a point in time after my own. The part that causes me concern is being disconnected from the timeline. If I were connected as I normally would be being at a different point in time would not be a concern as the information would still be present.
( gideon please get to the point )
How do you accept the knowledge that others may possess regarding yourself or those that you know when you cannot know it?
Third-Person Sample:
It had happened again. It wasn't the first time that it had occurred, Gideon had experienced multiple events during her stay in Wonderland, but those that affected her to the very core of her being were few and far between.
This time she hadn't been Gideon, at least not a version of Gideon that anyone that knew her would recognise, and slotting those memories in place with what she knew, and had always know, was difficult.
The first time it had been confusing, now it was difficult. How many new memories would she have that felt real and seemed real, but Gideon could only think of in the span of several days? She had 'lived' for over thirteen years, but these events gave her memories of childhoods that Gideon could never have experienced otherwise: feelings and sensations and relationships.
For someone that prided themselves on their knowledge, it was disconcerting, and had caused Gideon to question on more than one occasion as to what could be considered real, and how much to believe in the things that she'd felt and 'experienced'.
She'd tried to talk to others about it and though they could empathise with some of it was difficult to describe, and when others were human, living linear lives, it was harder to make them understand her concerns. It had led Gideon to come to look at the stars, to try and 'clear her head' and let the processes filter the information in their own way. Thinking about it hadn't helped. Perhaps unconscious processing would.
