LELIANA'S SONG { Marjolaine: Dead? Nonsense. I know you, my Leliana. I know what you are capable of }
Though Leliana is Fereldan she was born and spent much of her young life in Orlais, making her seem (or at the very least sound) Orlesian. After her mother died Leliana was raised by Cecilie, the lady that her mother had worked for. Growing up Leliana learned much about the royal court and Orlesian culture, including how to play the game. She was given everything that she could wish for, though Leliana only wished for books, gaining a passion for stories and songs.
Leliana was sixteen when she first visited Val Royeaux, meeting Marjolaine who would become more complicated in Leliana's life than she would yet know. Marjolaine became very taken by Leliana and took her under her wing, with Leliana being equally as enchanted by Marjolaine. She was worldy and daring, and taught Leliana many new talents. Learning how to hunt and wield a bow Marjolaine began tutoring Leliana in the art of being a bard, and though at first Leliana was upset when she accidentally wounded an animal, unable to end its suffering, she quickly became skilled in subterfuge and combat.
Leliana began to travel with Marjolaine, meeting Tug and Sketch on their travels, and saw much of Thedas - and getting into a lot of mischief at the same time. The wonder and enjoyment that Leliana had for these days would soon end when Marjolaine, afraid that Leliana would strike at her, betrayed Leliana -- setting her up for the fall of a crime, and almost killing her in the process.
Betrayed, hurt and wounded Leliana was arrested in Denerim, and seemed to have lost all hope. It was the gentle guidance of the Revered Mother Dorothea that brought Leliana back, giving her some hope and help which enabled Leliana to escape from her captors. With a new ferocity to her Leliana sought revenge upon Marjolaine and her captors, finding them and confronting them -- though she didn't kill Marjolaine. Not then. Uncertain of where to go from there Leliana returned to Mother Dorothea, looking to find herself and a new purpose in the Chantry, ending up in Lothering as a lay sister.
DRAGON AGE ORIGINS { Warden is a human female noble. She recruited the mages, sided with the elves and did not defile the Urn of Sacred Ashes. The Anvil of the Void was destroyed and Harrowmont was supported for King. She made the ultimate sacrifice against the archdemon to end the Blight }
Though Leliana began to find herself in religion and found peace in the Chantry she was seen as an outcast due to her interpretations of the Chant, and the claimed vision that Leliana had of the Maker. Her beliefs never wavered and Leliana followed her vision, taking leave from the Chantry. Leliana ended up coming to aid the Warden, requesting to join her in her quest to end the Blight. Although Leliana sounded mad with her vision the Warden accepted her help, her determination to bring hope to the world unstoppable.
Their task sounded simple, if 'travel Ferelden to recruit large groups of people whilst avoiding Darkspawn attack' could be simple, and it probably would have been just that simple if the world hadn't also gone to hell. They had four stops to make -- the Circle of Magi, Redcliffe, the Dalish encampment and Orzammar, but each had encountered their own individual troubles unrelated to the blight. The only way for any of the groups to join the Warden's endeavours was for them to be saved first, or there would be no army to pledge.
At Kinloch Hold they find that the Tower has been overrun by abominations, trapping the mages and causing unknown chaos. As the group make their way through the tower, aided by a mage named Wynne, they find themselves drawn into the Fade, under the influence of a sloth demon. It not only becomes a fight to save the Tower but their own lives, with Leliana caught in a nightmare until the Warden snaps her out of it. Rejoined with her friend she helps her defeat the demon, returning from the Fade to continue. As they made their way further through the tower they encountered a trapped, and tortured, Templar named Cullen. Fearful of the mages he urged them to kill all in sight but the Warden couldn't, not wishing to risk an innocent life on a fear. Defeating Uldred and the rest of the abominations the Wardens rescued the remaining mages, including First Enchanter Irving, securing the assistance of the mages against the archdemon.
It was sooner than that that they would have to call on him, after finding Redcliffe in an unfortunate disarray. After saving the town from the shambling undead it was discovered that the cause was due to the Arl's son, whom had become possessed by a demon. With the Arl ill, poisoned by the mage hired to tutor the Arl's son (Connor), the Warden needed to find their own solution. With the help of the First Enchanter a mage was able to be sent into the Fade to free Connor from the demon's grasp. Though Isolde, and later the Arl, was thankful they couldn't count on Redcliffe's support until Arl Eamon was saved.
Redcliffe troops had been sent to locate the Urn of Sacred Ashes, something thought only to be a legend -- though it was real. After travelling to Denerim they were able to pick up from the soldier's trail, discovering that the Temple of Sacred Ashes was located just outside of Haven -- a less than friendly town. Though the Temple was large, and heavily guarded, the group fought their way through until they located the ashes, completing the trials of the Guardian and proving their intentions true. Obtaining a pinch of the ashes, leaving the rest preserved, they returned to Redcliffe, curing the Arl and obtaining his support.
Their plan now became twofold -- continue gathering troop support whilst Eamon made preparations for a Landsmeet in Denerim. The Landsmeet would allow the fate Loghain's actions, turning the country against the Grey Wardens and causing a civil war, to be decided by the nobility. With the decision made, and a conversation over the new royalty postponed, the group went in search of the Dalish.
But, of course, though they were able to locate their camp they could not yet gain their help. Deep in the Brecilian Forest lived werewolves whom were attacking the Dalish hunters. The Dalish, fearful of losing more, asked the Warden to kill the pack leader in hopes of ending it. Venturing into the forest it didn't take long before they located, and were attacked by, the werewolves. They also discovered that there was more going on than they had been told, surprise surprise, and that the werewolves curse was due to the cause of the Dalish themselves. The Keeper, Zathrian, enacted the curse years before as punishment on some humans, trying his life to theirs. It took some persuasion but the Warden was able to find a peaceful resolve to the situation, convincing Zathrian to break the curse, thus ending his life. With the curse broken the humans left, and the Warden gained the support of the Dalish against the archdemon.
With three treaties resolved they travelled to Orzammar, finding the gates barred due to the death of the King. With the sigil on the treaty it allows them passage, though first they must do two things -- resolve the conflict of the throne, for only then can the troops be agreed on, and find Branka. With the Warden agreeing to support Harrowmont, fighting in the Proving Grounds for him. The Warden's support however isn't enough, and after travelling into the Deep Roads to find the Paragon Branka the Warden aims to further their support for King. Though the trip is dangerous, and they run across more darkspawn, they eventually do find Branka, and discover exactly what she became Paragon for. She leads them to the Anvil of the Void, 'technology' that enabled her to create golems to fight the darkspawn. Unfortunately they come with an unfortunate side effect, and it is the Paragon Calidin that urges them to defy Branka and destroy the Anvil. After hearing the truth about the Anvil the Warden sides with Calidin -- killing Branka and destroying the Anvil of the Void. Thankful for their assistance Calidin agrees to support Harrowmont for King, whom is then crowned, and the Warden gains the support of the dwarfs.
With all treaties used it is then that they travel to Denerim for the Landsmeet, though Leliana had a matter that she needed solving first. After Marjolaine sends assassins to kill Leliana, assassins that failed, they learn that Marjolaine is in Denerim. After breaking into her house Leliana confronts her former mentor, refusing to make the same mistake that she made before. Marjolaine had tried to kill her twice now, and knowing that if she spared her again Leliana would face more assassins again. With her decision encouraged by the Warden Leliana kills Marjolaine, closing the door (somewhat) on her past. With the matter resolved they travel to see Arl Eamon whom calls the Landsmeet. Due to helping resolve some personal matters for various nobles on their travels (such as saving children on the battlefield) the Warden has gained favour with the nobles, causing Loghain's actions to be harshly judged. Loghain however makes a strong argument, causing the matter to be decided by combat with Alistair duelling Loghain, defeating him. The only matter left is the crown. With Alistair posing a strong claim for King, being the bastard brother of the previous King, it could create an issue for Queen Anora. With Alistair not wishing to be King the Warden accepts this, supporting Anora's rule.
The only thing left now is the archdemon. Scaling Fort Drakon, where the darkspawn had centred, the group have a tough fight on their hands. They succeed, and it's left to the Warden and Alistair to end the blight, as only a Grey Warden is able to kill an archdemon. The Warden takes the killing blow on the dragon, and as it dies so does she -- killing an archdemon also causes the Grey Warden responsible for its death to die.
Leliana, saddened by the loss of her friend, is present as the coronation of Queen Anora, and the funeral of the Warden. Following this she returns to the Temple of Sacred Ashes before seeking out Revered Mother Dorothea for guidance.
DRAGON AGE II { Hawke is a male mage whose sister, Bethany, died on the way to Kirkwall. His brother Carver joined the Templars whilst Hawke was in the Deep Roads. Hawke sides with the mages and spared Anders' life. Leliana is absent for the majority of the events in Kirkwall, though she is knowledgeable of them due to her position with the Divine }
After Revered Mother Dorothea is becomes the next Divine, known as Divine Justinia V, Leliana is appointed her Left Hand -- a powerful, and dangerous position. Leliana is sent to Kirkwall using the name "Sister Nightingale", aiming to see whether an Exalted March is necessary to suppress the conflict between the templars and mages. It is whilst tracking down a group of apostates in Kirkwall that Leliana meets Hawke, asking for his help. She needs him to convince Grand Cleric Elthina to flee Kirkwall, asking her to go to the Grand Cathedral of Val Royeaux by invitation, and protection, of the Divine.
Leliana runs into Hawke yet again, and by coincidence again, when the two separately attend a party at Chateau Haine -- Leliana a guest of Duke Prosper de Montfort, and Hawke working with Tallis, a former associate of Leliana's. Their paths don't cross for long, with Leliana's business taking her on a different route to Tallis and Hawke's.
After Anders destroys the Chantry, and thus beginning the mage rebellion, Leliana aids Cassandra Pentaghast in tracking down and interrogating Varric Tethras -- a friend of Hawke's. Whilst Cassandra learns of Hawke's life in Kirkwall Leliana attempts to locate Hawke, though she proves unsuccessful. The two talk outside of Hawke's Estate and agree that if they can't find Hawke they need to find someone else to lead them to peace. With the Warden dead and Hawke evading detection they are running out of options.
DRAGON AGE ASUNDER { Though the novel is not 100% considered canon as some details (Warden and Landsmeet choices) can conflict with player choice world states, they offer details of what Leliana was doing leading up to the Conclave which would not have been affected by player choices in the games. Writer David Gaider has also said that they can be canon }
Leliana returns to Divine Justinia after her work in Kirkwalla, working to try and find a solution to the conflict between the mages and templars following the rebellion in Kirkwall. After Empress Celene holds a ball for the Divine in Val Royeaux Leliana meets Knight Captain Evangeline of the White Spire Tower. After an attempt is made on the Divine's life Evangeline steps in, helping to stop the mage from killing the Divine.
When Wynne, an old friend of Leliana's from the blight, is tasked with discovering what happened to a tranquil mage (Pharamond), Leliana is present and remains in contact with Wynne through the events. Wynne's mission entails her going to the Circle of Magi at White Spire, recruiting the aid of a spirit medium before travelling to Adamant Fortress where Pharamond had been working. Unbeknown to most it had been the Divine herself that had giving Pharamond his research task -- to look into the Rite of Tranquillity and see if there was a way to reverse it, and if the Rite could be done without destroying the mage's mind.
When Wynne completes her mission and requests an audience with the Divine Leliana is present, learning that Pharamond discovered that Tranquillity could be reversed, but he had not found an alternate way to conduct the Rite -- yet. Unsurprisingly this news is not well received by the templars, particularly Lord Seeker Lambert. After the Divine grants the mages a Conclave Lambert disrupts it, killing or imprisoning any mages there. After Wynne and Evangeline escape they plan to free Rhys, and the other First Enchanters captive in White Spire Tower. Leliana gives her aid to Wynne, helping to rescue the captive mages. It is Leliana's presence in this that reveals to Lambert that Justinia is conspiring against the Templar Order, and he writes to her stating that the templars no longer serve the Chantry.
DRAGON THE MASKED EMPIRE { As with Asunder the novel follows Bioware's 'canon' so any details of the Warden/Ferelden rule would contradict player chosen world states, but the novel gives insight into Leliana's activities prior to the Conclave and would not differ due to player made game choices }
Leliana, travelling as a representative of the Divine, meets with Empress Celene at the University of Orlais to discuss the tensions between the mages and templars. Revealing that she knows what Leliana and Justinia have been doing, and who Leliana is, Celene demanded that the Divine make an official statement regarding the conflict, something that Leliana only commits to taking to Justinia. After discussing her conversation with Justinia Leliana confers again with Celene, delivering Justinia's verdict -- she will help if the Empress ends the elven revolt in Halamshiral. Though Leliana is not favourable with this decision she wishes Celene luck.
DRAGON AGE INQUISITION { Inquisitor is a female Dalish elf. She sides with the mages and recruits the Wardens. Alistair is left in the Fade, Celene and Briala reconcile and she drinks from the Well herself }
After another Conclave is called which would hope to make progress, if not bring peace, between the mages and the templars it all goes wrong. The Conclave explodes, Justinia is killed and there is a hole in the sky from which demons fall. All they know is that one woman survived it, whom Leliana, Cassandra and the rest of Thedas believe caused the explosion. After taking in Lavellan the two talk to her, though she is unable to give them answer. With Leliana dispatched to the forward camp Cassandra tells her that she'll show their prisoner what has happened to the world. When Cassandra makes it to the forward camp she has news for Leliana -- Lavellan is able to affect the rifts caused, and perhaps close the breach. With the elf's help they make their way to the breach, with Leliana providing cover fire as they assault the breach -- and the demons that fall. Their effort is successful, though it almost kills Lavellan, and with the breach closed they fall back to Haven.
In the middle of arguing with a Chantry representative over Lavellan, the events at the breach and how to proceed, Lavellan enters their meeting. It is here that Cassandra makes a judgement, one backed by Leliana -- the rebirth of the Inquisition. With Lavellan agreeing to further aid them Leliana sends out her birds, making her contacts aware of what is happening and what they will all be doing yet. Leliana, taking up the position as Spymaster for the Inquisition, also recruits her friend Josephine Montilyet into the Inquisition, begging of her skills as their ambassador. Though they have a plan of action Leliana is troubled -- the events at the Conclave left her friend and mentor dead, and though she is a faithful servant of the Maker she questions him, and why he allowed Justinia to die. Although Lavellan is an elf, and does not follow the religion of the Chantry, Leliana asks for her thoughts.
As the Inquisitor works on closing the rifts Leliana gains information, and secrets, from all over Thedas to help them, helping to form new places to attack, or agents that could help them. As they discuss how best to act Leliana suggests approaching the rebel mages for help with the breach, believing that their magic could help to power the anchor on Lavellan. Leliana reveals that she supported the Divine's plan to challenge the methods of the Chantry, wishing for a fairer treatment for mages, as well as wishing to eradicate the inequality of all races. Hearing the arguments of her advisers Lavellan agrees to meet with the mages, and recruits them into the Inquisition. With the mages at their side they travel to the breach, the magic of the mages strengthening the assault by the mark. It ends in success. With the breach closed they return to Haven, in good spirits and celebrating their efforts.
Though they gained an ally, and a victory, they also discovered their adversary -- Corypheus. Though they had heard his voice as an echo at the Temple of Sacred Ashes it is here that the Inquisition finally sees him when he assaults Haven. Armed with a corrupted dragon and an army the Inquisition attempts to fend him off, though they realise that they must fall back, abandoning Haven to ensure they can fight again. With Corypheus believing them defeated it gives the Inquisition a chance to rebuild and begin operations against him before he can react. After Solas, a mage allied with the Inquisition, leads them to Skyhold (an abandoned fortress) they begin to rebuild and recruit, with Leliana taking the rookery as a place to work (and live). It is here that the advisors ask Lavellan to truly be their leader, giving her the title of Inquisitor.
After learning that the Grey Wardens have disappeared worrying the Inquisition they receive a report from a 'friend' of Varric's -- Hawke. Hawke has a lead (a Warden friend -- Alistair) that may help them track down the missing Wardens. It is revealed that the "Calling" that the Wardens are hearing, the signal that their life is near an end, is false, created by a follower of Corypheus, using it to give the Wardens to Corypheus. After assaulting an old Tevinter ruin where the Wardens are they fall back to Adamant Fortress where the Inquisition continues the assault. Just as the battle is nearly done Corypheus's dragon attacks, and in an attempt to save them from death the Inquisitor opens a rift -- sending herself, Hawke and Alistair (Hawke's warden contact) into the Fade. In the Fade the Inquisitor is helped by the apparent spirit of Justinia who reveals that the Nightmare, a demon controlling this part of the Fade, took the Inquisitor's memories of the Conclave. With her help the Inquisitor retrieves them, and makes their way through the Fade to face the Nightmare. Just before the conflict the spirit gives the Inquisitor a message for Leliana -- "I'm sorry. I failed you too". The fight against the Nightmare is tough, and Alistair volunteers to stay behind in the Fade to give Lavellan and Hawke a chance to escape. With the Inquisitor free of the Fade the rift is closed, and Lavellan recruits the remaining Wardens into the Inquisition. When Leliana is told of the message she tries to make sense of it, believing that it was she who failed Justinia rather than Justinia failing her.
Whilst checking reports Leliana receives a posthumous letter from Justinia, something that was to be delivered to Leliana should the Divine have died. Leliana speaks with the Inquisitor about it, asking her to accompany her to the Chantry in Valance. The letter states that Justinia left something there for Leliana, who believes that it could help the Inquisition. The two travel, and as Leliana reminisces about the last time she was at this Chantry they are approached by a fellow Chantry Sister -- Natalie. Though Leliana is cordial to her she uses it to mask her prying questions, quickly discovering that Natalie is lying to them about why she is there. After they finish deciphering the clues that Justinia had left for Leliana Leliana turns, holding a knife to Natalie and revealing that she knows that Natalie has lying, going further to add that she has worked out who sent her -- a Revered Mother who would see the Inquisition fall. Revealing that she knows the plan Leliana kills Natalie, explaining that she couldn't allow her to return to Victoire, and that it will send a message to the Revered Mother. Distraction over Leliana opens the container that Justinia had left, disheartened to find that there was nothing in it but a simple message -- "The Left Hand should lay down her burden". Realising that Justinia was releasing her from her service, fearful that she was using Leliana, Leliana comments on it, and the Inquisitor adds that the message that the spirit in the Fade gave him makes more sense now. Back at Skyhold Leliana speaks further to the Inquisitor, debating Justinia's message. Although Justinia feared that she was using Leliana it has helped Leliana to embrace who she is, murder and all.
After being unable to send a warning to Empress Celene regarding Corypheus the Inquisition attends the ball held at the Winter Palace, hoping to warn Celene about the assassination plot there. It's a dangerous affair, and as Leliana reminds the Inquisitor everyone here is well skilled in the Game -- no one is to be trusted. As the Inquisitor works to help Celene and uncover the would be assassin some unexpected help is given -- Celene's occult adviser, Morrigan, approaches the Inquisitor with some information that would help her to save Celene. When Leliana learns of Morrigan's assistance, knowing her from their travels with the Warden ten years previously, Leliana warns Lavellan about her, stating that although she can be a useful ally she doesn't know what Morrigan's motives are. Thankfully the advice pans out and the Inquisition is able to reveal the plot against Celene. In thanks Celene sends Morrigan to the Inquisition as a liaison, as well as pledging military support.
With Morrigan's assistance, and some new information, the Inquisition travels into the Arbor Wilds, believing that they know what Corypheus is after. Although Morrigan's first thought -- an eluvian -- is not Corypheus' goal they discover what it is -- the Well of Sorrows. In the Arbor Wilds they battle Corypheus' forces whilst racing to get to the Temple of Mythal before he does. Though the Guardian is reluctant to allow them to drink from the Well, warning that they will be bound to the will of Mythal, it is something that they need to do if only to prevent Corypheus from gaining the power. Lavellan volunteers to drink herself, uncertain of Morrigan's motivations for wishing to drink herself.
With the knowledge from the Well the Inquisitor discovers that Morrigan's mother, Flemeth, is actually the vessel of the elven goddess Mythal. After meeting with Mythal they learn about Corypheus' red lyrium dragon, and that it is the key to destroying Corypheus. She also gives them the power to fight the dragon, with the Inquisitor learning how to summon a mystical high dragon -- the Guardian of Mythal. This new knowledge empowers the Inquisition, and learning that Corypheus has returned to the Temple of Sacred Ashes to attempt to reopen the breach they meet him there. With the Guardian of Mythal distracting Corypheus' dragon it allows the Inquisition to face his forces. After the dragon is defeated the battle against Corypheus begins, with the Inquisitor removing the Orb from Corypheus, permanently sealing the breach. Opening a rift inside Corypheus he is destroyed, banished to the Fade.
With Corypheus defeated the Inquisition returns to Skyhold, attending the celebrations that Josephine had prepared. Abilities/Special Powers:
BARD. Bards are trained in both archery and dual-weapon knifework. Bards are minstrels trained in the arts of assassination and spying, knowing how to weave their way in to someone's favour only to turn on them later. Bards are knowledgeable in history, often told through stories and song, so they do not repeat the mistakes of others -- or become a part of history themselves. Leliana was trained as a bard in Orlais by Marjolaine, who ended up becoming fearful of Leliana's talents. Bards are also trained with hand gestures used to signal messages to other bards in the field. [1] SPYMASTER. Using her skills as a bard Leliana initially became Divine Justinia V's spymaster, becoming the Left Hand of the Divine. After the attack at the conclave, and Divine Justinia's death, Leliana continued her role as Spymaster for the Inquisition, using her numerous resources and network of agents to gain whatever intelligence and advantage they could over the ongoing threat. ROGUE. In addition to being trained in both archery and dual-weapon knifework, as all rogues are trained in one or the other, Leliana is also skilled at trap detection and lock-picking. She also has the ability to make and use poisons or grenades for combat.
Third-Person Sample:
It shouldn't have been possible. The Inquisitor was not here, and even so there was no breach, or Orb. There should not have been a rift, and the demons that Leliana encounters in the halls of the mansion only make that all the more real. The first few she dispatches with her daggers, returning to her room for her bow and to inform the others of what she'd seen.
With the location scouted out Leliana makes her way out to the forest, the familiar green of the rift shimmering through the trees. She doesn't have a complete plan in mind -- they have no way to close the breach, but she can at least protect the residents from the demons until they come up with something more. Perhaps it's an event -- she's heard of them, even experienced them before, but to have one from Thedas -- one that is so familar...
There's little time to think, with Leliana releashing an arrow before she can even make it to the rift. It hadn't been so long that she'd done this with the Inquisitor, helping her fend off Corypheus at the Temple of Sacred Ashes. That had had an end in sight, something that Leliana remembers clearly. She'd been in Wonderland for three months now, and though it was eventful the place was incredibly strange to her. Her friends made a few things familiar, their tales of Thedas memorable, but they were all that Leliana would wish for in familiarity.
Another arrow hits a new demon, and she's left wondering if she'd forgotten in this time, in the safety of no rifts or demons, just how destructive they are. But then, as a terror sends her crashing to the floor, it emerging from beneath her, she shakes that thought away. No, she could never forget what it was like. That information would stay with her until she died -- the fear, the feeling of the world being turned upside down again. Leliana had never known a quiet life but she'd had hopes for something simpler after the blight had ended, and then after Corypheus' defeat.
Apparently simple was not meant to be her life.
Perhaps that was not truly a bad thing -- there was still good in her life, and Leliana had to smile at the fact that she could still recognise that after everything that had happened. Shifting, reminding herself of the situation, Leliana kicked the demon before trying to roll away, quickly releasing another arrow into it, breathing a sigh of relief when it was dead.
It was far from over, however, and Leliana would need help. She was experienced but she could not fight all of the demons alone, nor defend Wonderland by herself. She had not become a fool after all she'd lived through.
First-Person Sample:
There are demons in Wonderland.
( There's no warning to Leliana's words, the urgency of the message that she's passing along greater than the need for any usual pleasantries that might begin a conversation )
I do not mean those that would claim it, or our fears, but ones that would seek us out, or simply kill us. Some will attempt to bargain with you, to strike a deal in their favour. Though they may offer you peace, or freedom, a demon cannot be trusted -- they will influence your mind, and take what they desire.
( And that's to say nothing of the abominations, but she's not going for outright fear )
They are in the forest, but it would not take long for them to come closer. Cullen, Robyn, I will need your help.
