Character Name: Helena G. Wells
Series: Warehouse 13
Timeline: 312 Stand
Canon Resource Link: helena @ wikia
Character History:
Helena was born in 1866 in Atlas House. Details of her childhood, other than the fact that she has a brother (Charles) are unknown. What can be said, though, is that Helena was gifted, and someone with a fantastic imagination - an imagination that she could often turn into a reality. An intelligent woman, and one with interests in science, Helena had a good education, one that strengthened her mind. She became an inventor, a scientist and a researcher - an author. She is H.G. Wells. Although the books were published by her brother (
❝ Charles provided the moustache ❞ ) Helena provided all of the ideas, and the research, and later turned some of those fictional ideas into a reality.

Helena's talents - her intelligence and her inventions got her noticed, and in good way. Although most would never believe that she was the actual H.G. Wells (in more than just initials), that a woman could be the one to come up with such ideas, there were some that did believe her, and gave her a fantastic opportunity. They were known as the Warehouse, specifically agents of Warehouse 12. Helena became an apprentice of the Warehouse, and was possibly not the first woman to do so but a rare woman indeed. She learned the secrets of the world, of 'artifacts' - dangerous items that could impress upon a person, and alter them until the artifact was neutralised. Helena found a use, and a thrill for her life in more than just her inventions - the Warehouse became her home, and somewhere that she felt that she belonged. It also did far more for her - it expanded her knowledge, and gave her things that she couldn't have dreamed of. And she was accepted - not just with those that she worked with but by the Warehouse itself ( ❝ Miss Wells? What do you smell? ❞ / ❝ Apples? ❞ / ❝ Yes. The Warehouse likes you ❞ ).

In addition to Helena's changing life as being a part of the Warehouse her life changed in other ways with the birth of her daughter, Christina. Although Helena was always caring and kind, someone that believed that guns had no place in a civilised society, her more gentle nature expanded as a parent. Christina became a big part of her world - someone that depended on her, and Helena adored the young girl - she was her happiest place, as seen in an illusion shown to Helena. As happy as Christina made Helena, and as much as she would do for her daughter, it came to an abrupt end after Christina was killed. Whilst staying with cousins in Paris, in 1899, their home was broken into. Helena wasn't there, likely on a mission for the Warehouse, but Christina was - home ill. During the attempted robbery Christina was killed, and this was something that deeply tore into Helena - something that she could never get over, and she failed to grieve.

It turned Helena back to one of her inventions, however, and a concept that she became a little obsessed with, to use her words. Helena began to look to time travel, to changing the past - not just for science any more but to try and prevent Christina's death. Although Helena was successful in building a time machine, though one that could only transport consciousness across time, Helena wasn't successful in preventing Christina's murder. Helena travelled back in time herself, her consciousness inhabiting the body of her cousin's nanny (the one home with Christina at the time), and although Helena did have an impact on the days events (using skills that she had but Sophie did not) she could not keep her daughter alive. And that became a new turning point in Helena's life, the event that sparked a darkness in her that would stay with her. Following Helena's failed attempts at keeping Christina with her she then turned to the men that killed her daughter. Helena looked for them, managed to track them down and killed them ( ❝ What I did to the men who killed my daughter... that's the worst pain a person can go through ❞ ).

Despite Helena's pain, a pain that she could not let go of (she didn't grieve, and her 'justice' hadn't brought her any peace), she stayed at the Warehouse - it being the only good thing that she had left. But now the Warehouse was more than that to her but also a resource as well - something that she used to fuel her wishes. Helena's interest in time travel quickly spiralled into an obsession, something that became out of hand. Her obsession meant that Helena became reckless - a constant pursuit to find another method into time travel, into saving her daughter had the opposite effect in her life - it meant that someone else died. It took the death of a Warehouse agent, someone that Helena worked closely with, for Helena to realise how far she had come. Rather than trying to stop, and to mend her actions, Helena took an alternate course, one that (given her behaviour) could have been seen as sensible, if at a loss. Helena asked to be bronzed - a cryogenic freezing process creating a bronze statue of the individual, something reserved for the 'worst of the worst'. Although Helena was cryogenically frozen her mind was still active and she was aware - ❝ it offers a lady time to think ❞, and think is what Helena did.

For over a century whilst Helena was bronzed she was deep in thought - thinking on her life, on her inventions and Christina. And, unbeknownst to those that had been at Warehouse 12 when she'd been bronzed, Helena had a plan, one that resided on a very large hope.

That hope became a reality when, in 2010, Helena was de-bronzed by a man known as James MacPherson, a man with something of a vendetta against the Warehouse. He had hoped that Helena would aide him in his plans, although it was quickly seen that Helena had other ideas in mind - ideas that he discovered after she killed him, after gaining what she wanted from him first. After eluding recapture by the Warehouse, and beginning a new life in this new century Helena had two things to do - catch herself up to this new world, and put her plan into motion, something that Helena managed to do rather quickly, if not with the greatest ease. Helena's plan involves her integrating herself back into the Warehouse in order to gain access to their resources, although with Artie's constant statements that she was dangerous and could not be trusted Helena had to find a more creative way of joining the team. Helena did this by monitoring artifact activity, finding the Warehouse team and offering her assistance in their efforts. In both of the missions that she met up with the Warehouse prior to her reinstatement Helena managed to do just that, offering herself as a 'changed woman'. Her act of wishing to help out of a fondness for the Warehouse with altruistic motives (other than it being the only place she had left, as she claimed) was good enough to convince Myka Bering, whose testimony about Helena was key in her reinstatement to the Warehouse.

Although Helena did form bonds with those that she worked with, particularly Myka, her main idea in mind was still that of her plan something that despite the enjoyment she had from working again at the Warehouse was something that she could not be dissuaded from - until the end. Her goal was that of murder and destruction, leading from the pain and anger that Helena had felt when she'd previously lived in the world (a pain and anger that had cemented itself further in her, and had strengthened through her century of being bronzed). After being reinstated in the Warehouse Helena had the lost Warehouse 2 uncovered in order to access an item that she wished for from inside of it - the final piece of her puzzle. The spear from Warehouse 2, along with the prongs that Helena had hidden on her daughter's coffin over a century previously Helena claimed before travelling finally to Wyoming. Helena's goal was to cause an eruption in the Yellowstone Caldera in order to start a nuclear winter. Ultimately Helena was stopped before she could complete her actions, prevented by Myka whom used the friendship that she had with Myka, and the trust in her belief that Helena would be unable to kill her - a trust that she was right to have. Although Helena was angry, and even afraid of the world that she was in, there was one thing that she had gained in her time in the new century - a friendship, and someone that she did truly care for. Although Helena had planned a destruction of the world, and Myka would likely have died in it, when faced with the demand of killing Myka before that happened Helena found herself unable to - she may have killed others before, and planned to again, but she was unable to kill someone she truly cared for.

But that wasn't the end for Helena. Although she was stopped, and taken into custody by the Regents, the punishment for Helena's crime wasn't to be bronzed again, but rather something more unusual. Given whom Helena was, and someone that had previously been quoted as 'one of the greatest minds', her punishment allowed her to be imprisoned whilst still providing help to the Warehouse - as unwanted as it may sometimes have been. With the use of an artifact known as the Janus coin Helena's consciousness, and all of her memories were separated from her body - her mind stored in the coin whilst her body was given a new life, and a new person was 'born'. Whilst her body lived in the world, giving Helena a chance at a fresh start and a new life (something that she did need), the coin containing H.G. Wells could be inserted into another artifact, one that was capable of presenting Helena in a holographic form enabling her to interact with the Warehouse. After all that Helena had been through, including knowing that she had done wrong, her punishment offered her time to think on what had happened, on how she felt and how to proceed from there - something that included Helena grieving for her daughter, in letting go of and moving past her pain. Whilst how Helena felt towards Christina, and what had happened to her, would never change what did change was how Helena reacted to it - although she still hurt, and was angry, her instinct was not to 'cause a change' in the world, nor to kill. Helena instead became focused more towards helping the Warehouse, and truthfully this time, either through providing information to them or assisting them in collecting an artifact. In addition to this Helena attempted to gain back the trust that she had lost, and her friendships. For most at the Warehouse it was difficult, but Myka was the person that she focused more on repairing her relationship with - the person that she had hurt the most.

Helena's attempts at an almost 'redemption' came to a head when she was reconstituted with her body. Helena's knowledge was something that became required by an individual, known as Walter Sykes, that wished to destroy the Warehouse. Sadly for the Warehouse he managed to find and capture both Helena's body and the Janus coin, reconstituting Helena as one entity again when they were together. The knowledge that was required from Helena was regarding something from Warehouse 12, and specifically something that her mentor had passed along to her. Although Helena had no wish to help him, to kill him to protect the Warehouse if necessary, Helena soon found herself not in control of the situation (or herself), and when Myka's life was placed in the balance she was found to be a little more cooperative. Although Helena did manage to save Myka's life it was at the cost of granting Walter Sykes what he wanted - access to the Warehouse. Whilst Helena and Myka did follow Walter Sykes, and the Warehouse team were already expecting him, it was a little too late given they they hadn't fully expected what Walter Sykes's endgame was.

When it was discovered what his plan was Helena did something that was completely unexpected, even to her. Although Helena believed herself to not be noble, that she was the cause of pain or hurt, Helena once again saved the lives of those in the Warehouse, although at a cost to herself. When a bomb threatened to destroy the Warehouse, including everything inside of it, Helena was able to reroute a part of the Warehouse's external shield in order to shield and save Myka, Artie and Pete - although for it to work it needed to be done outside of the shield. Although this meant that Helena would die it was something that she found necessary - the small sacrifice of her life meant that others could live, and continue to do the good that they did. Helena's final act, and sacrifice, also managed to change the last doubts in other's opinions of her - in doing something altruistic and without regard for herself she was truly helping, and was someone that could be trusted and counted on.

Abilities/Special Powers:
COMBAT. Helen is trained in both martial arts, favouring the style of Kenpō, and the use weaponry. Her knowledge of guns is basic, as she believes that a weapon has no place in a civilised society, but due to her work as a Warehouse Agent she was required to know how to use them and be proficient in their use. Rather than working with a traditional handgun Helena helped design something else - similar but less lethal. Known as the Tesla it fires an electrical current to temporarily disable a person, and wipes their memory of the last thirty seconds. In addition to martial arts and gun knowledge Helena knows at least six ways that she could kill someone, not including methods involving artifacts.
INTELLIGENCE. Helena is also incredibly intelligent, and far different from a typical woman of her time. Helena's mind is that behind the novels written by H.G. Wells. She is adept at research, is highly creative and imaginative and knows how to twist a good story. After being de-bronzed in the 21st century Helena was able to adapt to her situation well, despite all of the obvious differences. Although some things confuse or amaze her Helena took to learning what she could through reading and tutoring, enabling her to now possess reasonable computer skills and some knowledge of hacking (though she leaves a trail).
INVENTOR. In addition to her books Helena is also an inventor, and has an entire section devoted to her work at the Warehouse. Working with Nikola Tesla Helena created the Tesla gun that is still used by modern Warehouse agents, and even invented a device capable of time travel. Many of Helena's inventions are inspirations for her books or things that she used to help her at the Warehouse ( e.g. a grappling gun, her Imperceptor Vest, rigging her home with an antigravity generator, creating a 'fictional' metal... )
SCIENCE. Whilst much of Helena's knowledge in science is purely theoretical from her research she has a good knowledge of physics and chemistry. Though she'd only read about amino acids Helena was able to concoct a remedy to save the life of an agent, and in the future will work as a forensic scientist.
MULTI-LINGUAL. As well as her fluency in English Helena also speaks French and recognised hearing Demotic (spoken in ancient Egypt) when hearing it, mentioning that dead languages are a hobby.

"No, no, no-- wait."

There's a hand up, Helena's face buried in the research notes. She'd been close -- so close to deciphering the puzzle. There were people trapped on the mirror side, and though they'd discovered who it was (and had captured their mirrors) they didn't yet have a way to bring them back. Yet.

Helena had been analysing the puzzle that had been left, which wasn't difficult on its own but there was more to it than just a riddle and that was what made it so frustrating. There was one riddle inside another inside a door which they had no idea of where it's location would be.

"You're locked in a room. You can't reach the window. There are.... appliances, though goodness knows why." There's a noise of frustration. The riddle's laughing in their faces, almost -- taunting them about the people that are trapped. The appliances were on the other side of the room, and it wasn't likely that you could simply move them to reach the window.

"I'd question whether those objects were specifically there to mean something but--" But it didn't seem like it would. The frustration gets too much, just for that minute, and Helena finally stands, closing her notes rather sharply.

"They've put this with a bloody time limit, and I'm not one to call things impossible, no, but this place is downright ridiculous." It's ridiculous, and their are people's lives on the line. If it wasn't for that, or the time working against them, the frustration wouldn't be there, and perhaps Helena would be able to think clearer.

It's not a puzzle to be worked on alone, and she knows it -- she knows that their are others working on it too but she hadn't been able to agree with them. They weren't her team, and they didn't listen well. Neither did she when things were tense, and it was very tense. She couldn't bear letting anyone die, and so far it was seeming that way.

"I don't have anything." She laughs, self-pitying. Helena Wells always considers her mind to be great -- she loves puzzles and the mystery, and she hates this feeling. Uselessness, failure. It's making her feel defeated when she shouldn't be, because it's not over yet and the answer is within reach.

So... ( There's an awkward chuckle, and Helena smooths her hands down her jeans ) In an entirely hypothetical situation, say one were to... have blown something up.

( Hypothetically. Judging by the fact that there's smoke on Helena's clothes it's definitely not something that's occurred.

Or something that she knows how to deal with. Explosions from her inventions she can handle. Explosions from the technology of what is here? Helena doesn't know nearly enough about it. Thankfully it's just a kitchen appliance, not that she knows that )

What might one do about getting it fixed? Just for future reference, of course, in case something did ever occur. This is a strange place, after all, and stranger things have happened.

( She laughs again, giving a little wave )

Thank you in advance, I suppose.
