Character Name: Margaret "Peggy" Carter Series: Marvel Cinematic Universe Timeline: Captain America: The First Avenger Canon Resource Link:peggy @ wikia Character History:
Peggy Carter was born in 1921 in London where, as a bright young woman, she received a good education. Peggy later went on to join the British Military, becoming an advisor to the SSR - Strategic Scientific Reserve. By the time of the Second World War Peggy, a member of the British Intelligence, assisted in the escape of the scientist Abraham Erskine - the man whom created the super serum that would create Captain America. With Peggy's assistance in the freeing of Erskine she was assigned as a liaison to the American military to help them in their efforts in the war.
Peggy became an integral part of the "Rebirth" project, assisting in the training and supervision of the officers under consideration for receiving the serum. Peggy showed herself to have a no nonsense attitude when her abilities were questioned due to the fact that she was a woman, quickly proving to the men that questioning her was a bad idea. The one officer that showed themselves to be an exception to the general attitude of the squad was one Steve Rogers - the man who would later prove himself to be the rightful person to become the first super soldier.
After Steve was selected to receive the serum Peggy was chosen to escort him to the site for his procedure, where she got to know the man behind the brains and guts. Peggy found herself appreciating the honesty of Steve, noticing the things about the man that everyone else overlooked. During the procedure Peggy attempted to have it stopped, finding hearing the pained cries from Steve too hard to bear. After Steve demanded that the procedure continue Peggy watched with worry, quickly going to him once it was complete to find out how he was.
The celebrations didn't last long after a bomb exploded in the facility and Erskine was assassinated by a HYDRA spy. Peggy moved quickly into action, going after the spies and managing to kill one of them, attempting to kill the second before Steve pushed her out of the way - stopping her from being ran over.
After Steve's successful capture of the other man the General in charge of Project Rebirth took the SSR to Europe to bring the fight to HYDRA (an organisation dedicated to global domination under the lead of the Red Skull - Johann Schmidt), taking Peggy with him as a part of the team. Several months later when back in America Peggy met up with Steve again, finding him after one of the shows for the soldiers on front line, with him working as a performer to reinvigorate the spirits of the officers. Peggy confided in him that she believed he was meant for something more, something that spurred him into a rescue mission after he learned what had happened to the 107th - and that Bucky was either dead or captured. When realising that Steve couldn't be stopped from his mission Peggy agreed to help him, getting him to the site and giving him an exit plan. After Steve was late for the rendezvous point Peggy feared him dead, until his aptly timed arrival before his letter of death was issued. Relieved as she was to see him it didn't stop Peggy from reprimanding him for being late, and congratulating him on his job well done.
With her help in getting Steve to his mission site, and their earlier connection, Peggy continued working with Steve in their attempts to stop HYDRA. When meeting Steve to tell him that Stark (a civilian engineer and friend working with Peggy at the SSR) wanted to meet with him Peggy made her intentions - and attraction - clear to him, letting him know what she'd like to do after the war. After catching Steve in an embarrassing moment with another woman Peggy didn't hide her irritation at the discovery, surprising both Steve and Stark when she shot at Steve - just to test the shield that he'd use, and giving another clear reminder that she was not a woman to be trifled with.
Their efforts continued over the next few months, Steve and his team taking the full front of the attack whilst Peggy and the SSR backed up their efforts. After hearing that Bucky had been killed in the line of duty Peggy went to go see Steve, to try and comfort him about his loss. Although it wasn't easy, and perhaps was a failed effort given Steve's stubbornness, it didn't stop her attempts, trying to reason with him about how Bucky would have thought.
Sadly the war wasn't over, and Bucky wasn't the only loss that they - and this time Peggy - would experience. After capturing Arnim Zola the SSR discovered the location of the last of HYDRA's secret bases, and set out on a plan of attack. Although Peggy initially saved Steve's life by shooting someone that would have killed him, and later kissed him (for encouragement), Steve found himself in a no-win situation after the plane that he was on with Johann Schmidt - a plane set to bomb New York - needed to be put in the water to save other lives. An action that would result in his death. Knowing this Peggy tried to get Steve to tell her the plane's coordinates, trying to change his mind. The last that Peggy heard was Steve's voice, them setting a date for their promised dance before the communication cut off as the plane hit the water.
Abilities/Special Powers:
espionage. trained by the British Intelligence Peggy was a competent spy. Although working for the SSR her abilities and skills were ignored, and demeaned by her male colleagues, Peggy ended up finding out more about the investigation into Howard Stark than her colleagues could, although she did have help from Stark himself. Peggy's skills include undercover work, interrogation, fake accents and martial arts. She also later went on to be one of the founding members of SHIELD.
hand-to-hand combat. Peggy is known for having a nasty right hook, and as well as being able to hit hard is skilled in other forms of martial arts, able to take down opponents bigger in size than her. She has been able to defeat highly skilled agents and Red Room assassins.
marksmanship. Peggy is an expert marksman, efficient in small calibre firearms at both close and long range - able to kill the getaway driver after the assassination of Erskine.
linguistics. Peggy is fluent in English, Russian and German, and can pull off a convincing American accent.
tactician. Peggy's efforts during the war included her devising strategies to lead Steve Rogers and the Howling Commandos into battle. Although the Commandos were seasoned veterans they listened to Peggy's instruction, following her leadership. Peggy's strategies were proven to be good ones as the plans, combined with skilled officers, often went without a hitch.
codebreaker. Peggy showed her talents as a codebreaker by being able to decipher the code used by Leviathan when an expert codebreaker that had been specifically brought in was unable to. When she suggested the method used to break the code they claimed that they'd already thought of it but Peggy, unlike them, was able to also realise that it was written in Russian - deciphering the transmission to give the SSR their mission.
science. Peggy has a more than basic knowledge of chemistry, able to defuse bombs using chemical means - and basic household components.
Third-Person Sample:
Seeing Steve again was difficult. She'd heard him fall, his voice trying to provide her with hope as he steered the plane down. Finding out not only that Steve was here - alive - but that he would be found had been hard to hear, especially hearing that he wouldn't be found in her lifetime. That they would never have that dance.
She'd avoided him at first - after their initial, and slightly unfortunate meeting. She'd told him quite directly that she needed time with this before cutting the conversation off rather sharply. It wasn't the best way of dealing with it, and maybe after her initial feelings had cooled a little Peggy felt a little guilty about her reaction. It wasn't Steve's fault, at least not one hundred percent. She still stood by the feeling that if he'd just told her where he was putting the plane down that things would be different.
But then she'd heard about the future - about things that wouldn't have happened if she'd had her wish. And maybe that made Peggy feel guilty too, for selfishly wanting a good moment with a man that she absolutely trusted and respected. The world needed him more than she did, especially after all the good that he'd done.
It was why Peggy was now stood outside of his door, hand hesitating for a second or two before she gave a firm tap of her knock.
"Steve? It's Peggy. I'd like to talk to you." They needed to talk. And maybe Peggy needed to apologise. He didn't really deserve to be punched after all.
First-Person Sample:
( The face that comes across the feed is worried, controlled but she's letting some of it show. Things are frightening enough for some that words given by an unreadable expression wouldn't help. People needed a little care now )
It's hard not to be able to do something. Knowing that someone's in danger and you can't help.
( She remembers when she first met Steve - how he'd tried everything to be able to fight, to help people that he didn't know to do what was right but had been turned down at every corner. It was an admirable action to want to do that )
It isn't comforting to have to sit out, but no one would want you in unnecessary danger. At least know that there are people helping. Rescue teams are going out and everyone will be returned.
( Peggy doesn't know what they'll find there but she's being a brave face of reassuring words. They will all be found no matter what she knows. She knows that of the people going they won't come back without at least trying to save them all. The event may have kidnapped many people, but they wouldn't stop without a fight. They at least knew where they were being held - that gave hope, and confidence )
That means that they will need help when they return, and that's just as important as the mission. Doctors, friends. Those staying behind can guide you in how you can get rooms prepared. Everyone counts.
( Whether or not that eases any unhappy feelings or brings hope- she has to at least try )
