Personality:
Elena is stubborn and headstrong, a girl that knows what she wants and usually ( because her friends know what going against her will mean - a possible loss of friendship, and betraying her ), Elena usually gets it. The one thing about Elena's choices, particularly when it involves others - especially her friends, is that she will put them all before her. There has been many times in Elena's choice when she's been faced with hard choices, and just as many times when someone has died ( her parents, her aunt, and some of her friends ) and each time, to try and prevent that, Elena has acted selflessly. It could be said that Elena has a sacrificial nature to herself, but all she wants is to protect her friends so that no one else has to get hurt, and if her death stops that ( because all the situations that places her friends in danger revolve around her ) then Elena is willing to go that step. This can also make Elena rather reckless, sometimes going against what may seem like the better and safer choice and defying those that try to protect her so that she can enact her own wishes and her own attempts at protect. Ultimately, often because her friends ( along with Damon and Stefan ) love Elena, her wishes are seen through, and time and time again Elena does place herself in danger to save her friends ( but is often also saved ). One thing to note, however, is that even though Elena places her friends above her and is willing to die for them it does not mean that she wishes to die, but that she doesn't want them to.
Elena's confidence in her decisions, and often also herself, results in a somewhat calm exterior, even if Elena is terrified. As well as being strong in her choices surrounding others Elena also knows what she wants for herself, at least in some aspects of life. Elena is continually faced with hard choices, more than just life and death decisions, which has altered her view of the world - particularly after her introduction to the supernatural side of what exists, and her own part in it.
Elena enjoys life. Although the past few years have been hard for her, especially after the death of her parents - before everything else began - Elena has pushed herself to return back to 'the world', rather than hiding away as she initially wished to do. Before the death of her parents Elena was very socially active and spent a lot of time with her friends, either in cheerleading, at parties or outside of school. Although she is no longer a cheerleader, due to finding less enjoyment from it when she returned to practice, Elena is still very much involved with her friends and other school activities - for example the social dances. Although Caroline is more involved in the planning aspects Elena still does her part in helping out, even if that is only in preventing Caroline from having a meltdown.
Although Elena has her own troubles, worries and tragedies she is still there for her friends when something happens to them, such as the death of Bonnie's grandmother or Caroline being turned into a vampire. Elena is there for her friends not only because they were there when she needed them, but because she truly cares for them, and loves them. Bonnie and Caroline are Elena's best friends, her friends who have helped her through everything natural and supernatural and people that Elena would do anything for - including die to protect. Even though Elena has had to keep secrets from the two, for example not originally telling Caroline about vampires, she has done this to further protect them - to keep them out of the supernatural world in a hope of keeping them safe. Although it didn't always work it didn't lessen Elena's intentions, and any troubles that came from it they learned to work through and their friendship quite possibly strengthened through it.
With regards to Elena's family she loves them deeply, even if they cause trouble or heartache - such as her brother Jeremy. Despite the troubles Elena wouldn't be who she is without her family, and after losing her aunt Elena only had her brother ( and Alaric, Jenna's boyfriend whom Elena allowed to continue living with them - looking out for him as much as he did for them ). After all of the trouble, and loses, that Elena has been through it has caused her to feel lost, and alone - although her friends have suffered as she has ( but not always as personally ) Elena feels alone from simply the fact that she is losing people, and that it can be hard to relate and even talk about it. But, due to Elena's strong will, she works through it, feeling the loss but not allowing it to consume her ( although often there is something else happening that prevents her from being able to do that )
As well as loving both her friends and her family Elena is a kind and caring individual, to those that she both knows and doesn't know. She can also be perceptive with regards to how others are feeling, allowing her to try and connect with them to either talk or try to help them feel better. Even in situations that seem grim, for example when Elena was transitioning from a human to a vampire, Elena still tries to have a little hope - as without hope there is no light to help you move on, or to fight what may be coming. Elena has faced many situations that may seem hopeless, especially when she is powerless against the adversary, but with her own hope - and comforting of her friends, Elena tries to make something different seem possible.
Elena is also a romantic at heart, someone who enjoys 'gazing' at her loved one, sharing romantic moments and the ability to be comforted by them. Love is a powerful motivator for Elena, it's why she tries to do everything to protect her friends but with regards to the one that she truly loves - namely Stefan - it will drive Elena's actions further. After Stefan had been compelled by Klaus after making a deal with him Elena tried everything that she could to first find Stefan and then to get him back, trying to break Klaus's compulsion by making him remember her, who they were to each other and their love. Although she was unable to do that, and it seemed that Stefan was lost, the love that Stefan had for her made him unable to wish to harm her despite Klaus's demands ( but not compulsion, as that cannot be broken ). Although Elena tried to move on from Stefan, even after he'd returned ( although ultimately seemed different ) Elena couldn't help but love him, and when he was at risk from dying due to the plan to kill Klaus ( who may have been his vampiric bloodline ) Elena chose him ( and her friends ) to say a final goodbye to, rather than continuing on the road she'd been taking.
Ultimately Elena is a selfless person. She may have some selfish wishes, but when it comes down to acting - and ultimately living - Elena will chose the lives of her friends and the ability to protect them over everything else. Elena is also involved in the community, for example the Founders Balls, due to her giving and caring nature ( especially as it was something that was important to her mother, which has made it important to her ). Elena is a strong, and mature girl - someone who is capable of looking after themselves ( in natural matters ) but also wishes to be in control of her own decisions, even if they may be out of her hands.
After being turned into a vampire Elena's personality became amplified, as is what happens with all vampires. Due to this her feelings also become amplified, particularly those of grief and guilt (something that at first Elena found difficult to cope with). At one point, due to these amplified feelings, Elena turned her humanity off, and it was a long struggle before Elena turned it back on - she didn't want to feel everything that she'd done, and all of the pain she'd tried to leave behind. After turning her emotions back on Elena becomes determined, first to kill Rebekah (as she was why Elena had died) but after managing to turn her focus from Rebekah to more generally Elena becomes determined in life: to live as normally as possible. She wants her college education, to live as humanly as a vampire can, and to enjoy herself, and she's determined not to let anything interfere with that. Elena has now accepted her life as a vampire and all that entails, and is now in control of herself and her impulses.
The last time this happened I could accept it. People needed help but they just weren't that great at asking for it.

It's been months. Elena doesn't know how long it's been here - a day, a year? Everything looks the same, except broken. She remembered the riot from the last time that she'd been there, how much destruction there had been. She'd been left unconscious from it, and it was all a very bad memory. It looked as if woorse things had happened since, though. The place was a mess, and it seemed as if one more thing would be the complete destruction. In some ways Elena would be okay with that - she was not a fan of this place, but there were a lot of people here - some that she remembered, some that were actually okay. She didn't want them to die if this place was run over.
But first she had to find them - to see what was happening, if they were okay... if they were even still here. Elena had pulled on her clothes as soon as she'd woken in the med lab, hating the weaker feeling that came with being here. She was still a vampire - she still had to feed but her abilities were gone. Strength, speed... It was worse that being human. They'd be able to do more if they could fight - kill more dysthropes, find a cure faster. Keep the place safe. But maybe the people running the place didn't really want that - they never seem to care, anyway.
She's out on foot, walking quickly, ducking any debris hanging down. It's a grim sight and one that doesn't leave her with much hope. A quicker way to find her friends, to know if anyone was still here would be to use the network but Elena needed to see the place - to see what had happened. She could transmit as she walked, get both things done. Her old room had been in District 4. She couldn't quite remember where she was now - some of the details about this place a little fuzzy. She'd been home, she'd lived. None of this had been in her mind when she'd been gone and now she was back. It was all back. She didn't plan on staying - she needed to get back to being alive, and to get Damon back. There were things to do - here and at home, and they needed doing. Quickly.
