Character Name: Lydia Martin Series: Teen Wolf Timeline: 209 Party Guessed Canon Resource Link:lydia @ wikia Character History:
Lydia is originally a popular, self-centered person, or at least that is the image that Lydia projects out. A student at Beacon Hills High School Lydia knows what she wants, how to get it, and she knows that image is important, hence projecting the image of an almost brat rather than the highly intelligent girl that she is. This, however, is something that comes to quickly change over the next year after her new best friend walks into her life, and weird things start to happen.
When Allison Argent joins the school Lydia is quick to try to befriend her, instantly stating that the two will become best friends. They do. Lydia compliments the girl about her style, invites her to a party and sticks with her, and the two do (as Lydia initially states) become best friends. After Allison starts dating Scott McCall the girls go on a double date with both Scott and Lydia's boyfriend, Jackson - the date, of course, being Lydia's idea. Although the date initially starts as fun, the girls talking and enjoying themselves, and Jackson being Jackson, Lydia later ends up proving herself and her abilities after Jackson's 'Jacksoning' goes a little too far into douche territory, and Lydia makes certain to show him up.
Lydia's life, at this point, is fairly normal. She goes to school, she sees her friends and she spends time with her boyfriend. It isn't until one night when Lydia and Jackson go to the video store, Lydia again getting her own way and making Jackson rent (again) The Notebook, when things begin to change. Although Lydia doesn't realise it, or actually know what happened, this is the start of her introduction into the supernatural and the truth behind what happens in Beacon Hills. When Jackson is sent into the video store Lydia stays in the care, entertaining herself by taking selfie's (and selfie videos) of herself. It is during this that the crazy and impossible happens: something crashes through the video store window. That action itself scares Lydia, it being unexpected, but the glimpse that she catches of the thing (an animal larger than one she's seen before, and one that doesn't look particularly friendly) frightens her even more. The next day from this Lydia stays home from school, and when Stiles comes to see her it's difficult to get a conversation out of her, not because of the trauma from the incident but because of the medication that she's taken (to calm her and to forget).
After the incident it takes Lydia a little while to recover from the incident, at least internally as the face that Lydia puts on would tell everyone otherwise - that she was strong, fine, and nothing had rattled her. But Lydia wanted to be okay, to forget and to not be scared so that is what she does - getting on with her life, having fun with Allison and Jackson, and continuing with her education. The last part, however, is something that does come as a surprise - not to Lydia but to others. On parent/teacher night her parents discover how well Lydia is doing in school and seem surprised to learn just how intelligent she is - her teachers know it, but Lydia has perfected her facade enough that everyone else seems oblivious to it - just as she'd hoped. Her teacher also remarks that she has incredible leadership qualities as well as noting how well she does in class.
It isn't long after this, however, that something else happens. After Scott and Stiles end up trapped at the school by the Alpha werewolf (the creature that Lydia kind of saw at the video store), Jackson, Allison and Lydia end up being called there to pick them up, although the rescue doesn't go quite as hoped. After entering the school, and finally finding Scott and Stiles, the group ends up being just as trapped as their friends were, although these three have no idea as to why, other than the (bad) story that they're given. When things become even worse than just becoming trapped, and the five find themselves in the chemistry room, it's Lydia that starts them on a way to escape when she concocts a Moltov Cocktail (from memory). Although the plan, after it's given to Scott, doesn't quite work they do eventually make their way out of the school, although not all of their friendships are quite as good as they were before they arrived.
After telling Allison that what she did was right, that breaking up with Scott due to being unable to trust him after the incident at the school, it's also Lydia that finds herself lacking a relationship after Jackson breaks up with her. With the winter formal approaching Lydia finds herself a little stuck and in a bind - she has a fabulous dress to wear but no one to look fabulous with, or dance with. In a comfort for herself, and somewhat of an apology to Allison (as she kissed Scott), Lydia takes Allison shopping for the formal and buys her friend a dress. It's also, at Allison's behest, why Lydia goes to the formal with Stiles - to apologise to her friend, and do things for her. Although Stiles is well dress and kind Lydia shows no interest in him, and refuses to dance with him at the formal. It takes frustration from Stiles and a couple of truths (him knowing about her intelligence, complimenting her beauty and trying to be forceful) before Lydia even pays any attention to him and, finally, they do dance. Minus how good Lydia looks, and the dance (though Lydia wouldn't admit to enjoying it), it was likely the worst formal that Lydia had attended - she didn't enjoy herself.
But it didn't end there. After arguing with Jackson at the formal Lydia leaves, although she's intent on finding Jackson - she loves him, even if he is rude and mean. Out on the lacrosse field, where Lydia had been told that he was, Lydia ends up finding something else instead - a man that isn't quite a man. The man at first scares her, his creepy exterior and nature, but it's after this that scares her the most after he turns into the creature that she'd tried to forget from the video store - the Alpha werewolf. Although Lydia tries to run and escape Peter is faster and attacks her, giving Lydia the bite.
Lydia is found by Stiles, and then later Jackson whom takes her to the hospital. She spends a while unconscious, recovering from the bite, whilst Scott and Stiles sit wondering whether Lydia will turn or die. After the bite doesn't heal, nor die, Scott and Stiles are both confused and uncertain about what will happen, although their uncertainties are alleviated when Lydia does wake up. But it doesn't mean paradise, however. Lydia ends up leaving the hospital in the middle of the night, and unnoticed, and ends up spending a few days in the woods. When Lydia is eventually found she has no memory of leaving the hospital or even what she did in the woods, something that they refer to as a fugue state. Although, in true Lydia fashion, she doesn't view it entirely negatively, trying not to show her real feelings about it. She did lose nine pounds out there, after all.
When Lydia returns to school it's a different story. The once popular girl is now viewed in a different light, and is seen as the town crazy after running about in the woods. Although she tries not to let it bother her externally, to keep up her image and try and gain back some of what she'd lost, it's obvious that underneath her exterior Lydia is bothered by this - she'd lost what she had, and Lydia isn't used to not having what she wants. It isn't just the response that Lydia received at school that bothers her but the hallucination that Lydia had at the hospital and her trip into the woods. The latter is the reason as to why Lydia's mother urges her to see the school counsellor, and although Lydia isn't fond of the idea she does go - if say little.
From here it all just continues, and after hallucinating once before Lydia finds herself hallucinating again. Lydia's hallucinations aren't only hallucinations, however, as they stem first from something else, and she dips again into another fugue state when they occur. This time Lydia's hallucinations are of a young man, one that Lydia initially tried to push away but later found herself intrigued by him. It isn't until a few conversations have passed, and he has invited her home with him, that Lydia realises the truth - the young man that she believes that she's been talking to isn't real, and that he's actually Peter Hale. And slowly, he lets Lydia know that he has something planned for her. She doesn't know what it is, nor does she remember the conversations that she has with him afterwards, but when the moment comes Peter's plan is put into motion, and Lydia is powerless against it. Using the worm moon on her birthday, and Derek Hale, Lydia revives Peter. When he bit her he knew that she could, and no doubt knew more than he told her. But one thing that is learned? She's immune, and that's why she didn't turn or die.
Abilities/Special Powers:
SUPERNATURAL:
IMMUNE
→ Lydia is a special individual in that she is immune to the werewolf bite. After Lydia was bitten by Peter Hale, instead of turning or dying (the two options) nothing happened to her, showing that she was immune. Although no one originally knew this it was revealed that Peter Hale had known this, and that he'd bitten her on purpose as a back up plan, which was discovered after Lydia somehow brought him back to life
BANSHEE
→ additionally, and possibly contributing to Lydia being immune to the werewolf bite, Lydia is a banshee. Although this is new information to her she has used her banshee abilities multiple times over the past year, especially in the last few months. In lore, the banshee is also said to be "The Wailing Woman", which is seen as an omen of death and a messenger from the Otherworld [1]. A banshees scream is supposed to also be an omen of death [2] and that banshees have been described as women with long, red hair and pale skin. Although the banshee is seen as a death omen, and even referred to as the Harbinger of Death, the banshee is actually of a 'death announcement', with her scream foretelling a coming death [3]. As such, Lydia's powers have been currently shown in several episodes, all of which were prior to Lydia discovering (or rather being told) that she was a banshee, for example:
'HARBINGER OF DEATH' → in multiple episodes Lydia has discovered a dead body, after entering a fugue state. These fugue states cause losses of time for Lydia, causing her to travel to a location different to where she was planning to go, or to find herself somewhere different without knowing how, or why: until she finds a dead body. As such this has happened in 201 Omega, 303 Fireflies, 304 Unleashed and 309 The Girl Who Knew Too Much (x2). Additionally with finding the bodies, Lydia has also preempted this with a scream. PIERCING SCREAM → as well as the scream which marks a death, Lydia has also been known to produce a piercing scream which is capable of travelling a great distance and has been heard by others, which has occurred in 201 Omega and 309 The Girl Who Knew Too Much. GHOSTS → In 306 Motel California, whilst at the motel for the night Lydia heard the suicides of many of the previous guests that had stayed at the hotel, and was the only one to have been able to do so. Although it has not been mentioned since, due to (in lore) the banshee's connection with the Otherworld (the realm of the dead, and the home of spirits [4]) it would explain why Lydia was able to hear the suicides, and why she was the only one too have seen the old lady at the reception desk. Additionally, it would also provide an explanation for how Lydia was able to resurrect Peter Hale, after first having 'hallucinated' him on multiple occasions, as she may have been seeing and communicating with his ghost rather than a hallucination.
NATURAL:
Lydia is one of the smartest students at Beacon Hills High School, with a grade "A" average, although you wouldn't think it to talk to her (at first). Lydia is a genius, who reads and learns simply to overcome boredom, and knows how to make Molotov Cocktails from memory. Additionally she knows both Classical and Archaic Latin, as well as being well versed in science and maths. She also particularly likes astrophysics and aims to win a Fields Medal
Every time it happened Lydia was confused, and a little bit scared. The lapses in time, and her memory, kept reminding her of the time that Lydia had spent in the forest, or rather the moment when she woke up from her walk. She didn't know what was happening, nor why, or even why it was her. She didn't understand it, and that was a feeling that Lydia wasn't used to. The same had happened again, when Lydia had awoken in this place. Wonderland, they'd called it. She'd read about the place, obviously, the silly children's story, but people claimed that she was here. People claimed crazy things, and she was supposed to be the crazy one now. Which she wasn't, especially not when Lydia Martin was firstly not crazy, and not making up these crazy claims.
But that didn't explain where she was, either, nor how she'd gotten here. It obviously wasn't Wonderland, not a place that did not exist, but Lydia hadn't found any clues as to where she was - no signs, no names. No one else that was helpful.
As well as uncertain it also made Lydia afraid. She'd been kidnapped. Strange things had started happening to her back at home, and this was the strangest of them all. Kidnapping. So far Lydia had spoken to about five people, all of them stating that they'd also been brought here, but she hadn't heard who had brought her to 'Wonderland' or even from them. It wasn't right, that didn't seem like how kidnapping worked. She was alive and unharmed, but she hadn't heard any demands.
She'd taken to walking, even in her heels. Even if they weren't doing or demanding anything, or even keeping them tied up and trapped, Lydia didn't plan on making it any easier for them - she didn't want to sit around as bait. She'd seen some of the mansion, a couple of floors as she'd made her way down before finding the grounds. Lydia had kept walking, kept looking, and that idea had been fine until she'd gotten herself lost. It was a maze. A big puzzle. Lydia was good at puzzles, but this one seemed to change. Every time she thought that she had a way out, had it figured out the path that she wanted seemed to suddenly be blocked. Lydia had been walking back on herself for over an hour now, probably closer to two and it was frustrating. She didn't want to give up, she refused to because she wasn't going to be trapped. Lydia Martin was not going to be anyone's prisoner.
Except she was trapped. She was trapped in a stupid maze, and the puzzle was seeming to beat her.
